Late this afternoon (March 20) a Las Vegas jury found former UFC and Bellator MMA fighter War Machine guilty on multiple charges in connection with the beating of his ex-girlfriend, Christy Mack, in 2014.
War Machine, who was born Jon Koppenhaver, was found guilty on 29 of the 34 charges he was facing. Charges he was found guilty of include sexual assault, kidnapping, and coercion, however he was able to avoid the most serious charges of attempted murder. Even with Koppenhaver avoid those serious charges, he can still face life in prison.
War Machine was on trial for an August 8th, 2014 incident where he broke into the house of Ms. Christy Mack. He then attacked both Mack and her boyfriend, Corey Thomas. The attack left both with serious injuries. Mack spent over eight hours on the witness stand describing to horrendous nature of the assault as well as previous beatings and rape she suffered before the August 2014 incident.
Koppenhaver was captured on August 18, 2014 after being on the run for 10 days. While in jail he declared his innocence and indicated the incident was a misunderstanding. He later attempted suicide.
