Electronic Arts said Thursday (August 2) that the company did not purposely omit Colin Kaepernick's name from a song it licensed for its latest game.
The video game maker came under fire when it was discovered by a Twitter user that Kaepernick's name was censored from YG's song "Big Bank," which is used in the soundtrack for "Madden NFL 19."
"We made an unfortunate mistake with our Madden NFL soundtrack," EA said in a statement issued Thursday evening. "Members of our team misunderstood the fact that while we don't have rights to include Colin Kaepernick in the game, this doesn't affect soundtracks. We messed up, and the edit should never have happened. We will make it right, with an update to Madden NFL 19 on August 6 that will include the reference again. We meant no disrespect, and we apologize to Colin, to YG and Big Sean, to the NFL, to all of their fans and our players for this mistake."
Big Sean, who makes a guest appearance in the song and performs the verse that references Kaepernick, weighed in on Thursday before EA issued its statement. Kaepernick later thanked Big Sean in a tweet.
In the song, Kaepernick's name is referenced about halfway through Big Sean's verse when he says, "Feed me to the wolves, now I lead the pack and s---. You boys all cap, I'm more Colin Kaepernick."
Kaepernick drew attention to social inequality issues during the 2016 season by kneeling during the national anthem as a means of protest. He pursued free agency in 2017 but wasn't given a tryout. He filed a collusion suit against the league's 32 owners last October; the case is ongoing.

It looks like WWE 2K19 is on track to be truly "Phenomenal."
According to reports from Pro Wrestling Sheet, 2KSports and the WWE have chose current WWE Champion AJ Styles to grace the cover of WWE 2K19. In addition to the cover star being named, the pre-order DLC is said to be none other than Rowdy Ronda Rousey.
Apparently, both Styles and Rousey were part of a cover reveal commercial shoot this past week in Memphis. You may recall that the WWE did the same thing last year with cover star Seth Rollins and DLC superstar Kurt Angle.
In addition to those names being revealed, it was also reported that WCW/WWE legend Rey Mysterio was also present for the shoot. Mysterio most recently has wrestled for New Japan, but he did take part in both the Royal Rumble and the Greatest Royal Rumble this year.
An official announcement with more game details is expected this coming Monday (June 18).
Starting in March of 2019, Sony's PlayStation Plus subscribers will no longer get monthly free games for the PlayStation 3 or the PlayStation Vita. It won't affect any games you downloaded previously, however, according to a post on the PS Blog.
The move to stop offering the free games for PS3 and PS Vita makes sense since the systems have been discontinued by Sony. While it does take away some of the value of the Plus subscription, it may mean more free games for the current gen PS4 every month. No matter what, at least they have given a year for us to get used to not having those free past gen games. #TechLogik
HQ Trivia is one of the fastest growing mobile games in the world. The app allows users to attempt to win cash playing a live trivia show twice a day, every day. Long time users of the app have grown quite fond of the usual host of the trivia games, Scott Rogowsky, but one ad agency thinks that they have a guy that fans would like just as much. They want Captain Obvious, the spokesperson for Hotels.com, to host a few games of trivia.
CP+B, the agency representing Hotels.com and Captain Obvious, reached out to HQ to see if there are any advertising opportunities within the app, but learned that HQ is not currently working on branded integrations. So, the team whipped up the audition clip while it was shooting some other social content with the character a couple of weeks ago.
HQ has experimented with a few guest hosts, including late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel last month.
