It should as no surprise, but "Spider-Man: Homecoming" dominated this weekends box office. The joint venture by Sony-Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios collected a massive $117 million at the domestic box office, a full $37 million more than studio estimates. This opening weekend total is the second highest for the Spiderman franchise, just behind 2007's "Spider-Man 3."
“Homecoming” is the only major release this weekend, so the top five are made up to familiar faces. Coming in second was “Despicable Me 3,” which is headed for a $34 million weekend, or a 53% drop from last weekend. “Baby Driver” is looking good in third, as positive word of a mouth helped it to a $12.8 million second weekend, just a 38% drop. For those who weren't excited about a teenage superhero, they still had “Wonder Woman” as the Amazon Princess continues to hold on with $10.1 million in its sixth weekend, and last and maybe least, “Transformers: The Last Knight” rounds out the top five with $6.3 million.
